Best Hiking Clothes for 2020

What to wear hiking?

That is a question we get asked often.

The short answer is to just grab what you have already and GET OUTSIDE!

At the end of the day we are happier knowing you went for a hike and said HELLO TRAIL than if you would have just stayed at home because you did not have the proper apparel or hiking gear.

Because we know you want to be fully prepared, comfortable, and make your next trail experience your most memorable we have outlined some of the essential hiking clothes to seek out.

Let’s work our way from the bottom up...

Hiking shoes - Since you will most likely be on terrain mostly made up of dirt and rocks you will want to invest in a good pair of hiking shoes at the very least.

They will have sturdier soles made to handle varying surfaces than your typical pair of athletic shoes.

You could also find a pair that can double as a trail running shoe if you want to get the most bang for your buck.

Hiking boots - These are going to be more beefy than hiking shoes.

Most hiking shoes will be at or above ankle height and provide more waterproof coverage.

They will also typically be stiffer making them an ideal solution for rocky trails.

The key is knowing where you will be hiking and your personal style to determine whether you should opt for shoes or boots.

Hiking socks - Keeping your feet comfortable should be priority number one for every hiker.

Whether you want women’s specific hiking socks, waterproof hiking socks, or just a nice pair of merino wool socks, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Preventing blisters while hiking will make your post-trail adventure that much more enjoyable when you don’t have to soak and bandage up those beat up feet.

Hiking pants or shorts - Although we have enjoyed plenty of hikes in just gym shorts or running shorts there are some benefits to seeking out full coverage in a pair of hiking pants.

Most versions these days are made with thin moisture wicking materials so you do not get too hot.

The best part is that your skin will be protected from both the sun and any vegetation that could potentially irritate you.

There are even convertible hiking pants that allow you to zip off the lower leg if you are getting too warm.

Jackets - Hiking jackets come in many varieties.

Whether you want a lightweight waterproof rain jacket, a 3-in-1 jacket to allow for temperature changes, or a simple softshell hiking jacket, you will not have any trouble finding viable options.

Just in case - Depending on the time of year and elevations you will be hiking at you might want to pack along gloves and/or a hat, but for the most part the above will be your best hiking clothes option as you start to fill out your outdoor adventurer’s closet.
